In order to examine the clinical characteristics in 53 panic patients who ever visited emergency room with the panic attack(emergency room group, ER group), the author compared with 80 panic patients who never visited emergency room inspite of
the
panic
attack(non emergency room group, NER group). The results were as followings:
1. The female subjects of NER group visited neuropsychiatric outpatients clinic earlier than those of ER group after the first panic attack.
2. 17(42.5%) of 40 subjects who recalled the time of visiting emergency room in ER group were suffered from their panic attack during sleep. Among them, the panic attacks were occured during the first half of the night(11 PM-2 AM) in 8 subjects
and
during the second half of the night(2-6 AM) in 9 subjects.
3. Dizziness, heart pounding and fear of death were frequent symptoms in order in ER group but heart pounding, dyspnea and chest pain were in NER group. Dizziness was occured more frequently in ER group than in NER group(p<0.01).
4. Mean severities of symptom of dizziness(p<0.01) and fear of death(p<0.05) were higher in ER group but those of heart pounding and dyspnea were higher in NER group than in counterpart(p<0.05). And those of chest pain(p<0.025) and heart
pounding(p<0.05) in male subjects of NER group and that of dizziness(p<0.01) in female subjects of ER group were higher than in counterpart.
5. Compare to the ER group, the NER group exhibited higher hostility score on self rating scale of SCL-90-R(p<0.005). And the score of interpersonal sensitivity was higher in male subjects of ER group than those of NER group(p<0.05).
